whilst building my vw trike on a phenix frame i have run across a problem the shaft comes straight out of the gearbox ,but needs to veer over to the left to reach the gear stick mount,on the frame i have tried a uj joint in the shaft ,but the gears still do not change smoothly any one any ideas on this one thanks

A uj is not happy working past 45 degrees. Suggest you either pop another uj in @ the point it makes its first bend, or at the point it makes the last bend. My guess is it only makes one bend , but either way pop 2 in @45 degrees to each other. The other option is a central shift that is closer in line to "true" You could also consider a bit of nylon on the shaft carrier. Try a bit of that plastic stuff they wrap insulation tape around (cut to size) and give it a dose of PTFE grease (other stuff is available)
